Call for Volunteers and Teaching Aides

EKC Membership,

As part of our ongoing commitment of community education, the East Kentucky Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has teamed up with the Lexington Living Arts and Science Center to participate in their 2009-2010 Academic program. Titled "The Architecture of Life", this 12 month education curriculum themed around architecture will include various events and classes for children and young adults in the Lexington Area. It is an excellent opportunity for design professionals to be involved in the community and define the role of the architect.
EKC has offered to assist the LASC in three areas, providing Teachers, Teaching Aides and helping facilitate a Design Build project.

1. Discovery Night - This would comprise two to three architects teaching in a two hour session on October 1st from 6pm to 8pm. The description for the event is as follows: From city organization to building details, our surroundings influence our built structures. The American Institute of Architects East Kentucky Chapter will present a workshop, "From Conception of an Idea to the Habitation of the Structure". Explore with us the role of the Architect who interprets and creates our built environments.

2. Discovery Exhibit - It is a one year long exhibit at the Living Arts and Science Center that focuses on the relationship between art and science. Made up of various physical elements that conform to the theme, architectural elements comprise a portion of the display. Local firms are asked to donate tools, models and objects that explain the discipline of architecture.

3. Design Build Project - This small scale exterior construction will be made up of recycled and or new materials. It is a hands-on experiment in form and structure. AIA Members could direct the design build project with students, staff and parents.

We are asking for volunteers to help administer this program. Interested members should contact Mike Sparkman mike@lsarc.net or Pam Clements pam@lsarc.net by August 21, 2009. Thanks in advance for your interest.
